Marwan ElShorbagy is only the third player ever to win the World Junior Championships twice after compatriot Ramy Ashour and older brother Mohamed Elshorbagy. ElShorbagy shot to prominence by securing the under-17 British Junior Open and won the under-19 event in 2012.
Marwan had a wonderful 2015/2016 season, in his first full season wearing AWsome Sports.
He started the season with making two finals in China and India the first month, beating higher ranked opponents Tarek Momen and Omar Mosaad. One of his next events was prestigious World Championships. Here he lost to squash legend, Nick Matthew in the third round, but the level of the squash he was starting to display against the very best players was a sign of the rest of season to come. 2016 was where he really began to shine.
In his next tournaments he exceeded his seedings to reach 3 Quarter-Finals and a Semi Final, along the way beating higher ranked players Miguel Rodriguez and Karim Gawad. It was the Grasshopper Cup in Switzerland where he really showed the World what he’s capable of. He beat higher ranked Simon Rosner in the Semi-Final, and went on the beat World Champion, Gregory Gaultier in the final. An incredible tournament for the then 22 year old.
He wasn’t done yet though, he also went on to win The Houston Open to finish off his most successful season, and be rewarded with a high ranking of No.6 in The World.
The 2016/17 promises to be even better for the young man.
